About Aston-Patterning®

Tamar

Aston-patterning is a system that combines bodywork and movement education in order to change existing patterns in one's alignment, which are creating excess tension and misalignments. Judith Aston created this system following her career in dance and studying and working with Ida Rolf-the developer of Rolfing. In fact, Judith Aston was asked by Ida Rolf to create a movement protocol for Rolfers. She developed her unique system of assessment and treatment during and after leaving the Rolf Institute. Her approach takes into consideration the asymmetries inherent in all bodies and the interactions between gravity and ground reaction force in movement.

Although massage reduces tension, the effects are usually short-lived, especially if a person is using their body in a way that produces tension. Unless the causes of the tension are addressed, the problem will never be resolved. Aston-patterning offers people the opportunity to be active participants in changing the way they use their bodies. Together, the client and practitioner will explore what are the causative factors in the client's tension patterns and discover new patterns of body use.

The most unique aspect of Aston-patterning is its emphasis on respecting the individual. The goal of Aston-patterning is for everyone to be in his or her best body. This obviously differs from person to person. Together, the Aston-Patterning and the client define goals that address the individual's needs and explore ways to reach them that respect the client's abilities and limitations.
